Quiz of
the Month, PACER Update, Updated Individual Rules for Magistrate Judge
Frank Maas & Civil Cover Sheet Reminder
PACER Update
We
would like to advise the CourtAlert
community that PACER has recently updated their web site. When a user has
traditionally needed to access a docket sheet from the PACER site they
would access the page that lists all of the courts (<<details>>).
This link would only access the courts data to provide docket sheet
information. The site has been updated to also include court information
that includes the following:
·
ECF Go Live Date
·
Maximum PDF File Size
·
Maximum Merge Document Size
·
Court Address, Phone Number & Divisional Offices
A user
can obtain this information by just clicking on the icon listed next to
each court. Also included next to each court is an indication of what
software version of CM/ECF the court is presently using.
Updated Individual Rules for
Magistrate Judge Frank Maas
Magistrate
Frank Maas has recently updated his individual rules. If you have any
cases before him, please download a copy and forward them to the
attorneys working on the cases. <<details>>
We have
included one particular subject from his rules that we think you should
pay particular attention to:
Just as
we reported last week about Judge Batts warning users to not file letters
so does Magistrate Maas in his practices. Magistrate Maas
even goes as far as mentioning that if a letter is filed electronically
it will be disregarded.
Civil Cover Sheet Reminder
Most of
the CourtAlert community is
very experienced in the area of filling out and filing a Civil Cover
Sheet in federal court. There are at times it can get a little tricky
filling it out especially when it comes to answering the question about
the case being related to another matter or if a certain judge hears
particular cases such as admiralty, labor, securities or intellectual
property. If a preferred judge is among those assigned to handle any of
the claims alleged in the complaint, the practioner should check the
relevant claim box likely to lead to an assignment to that judge. Please
be aware that the Eastern District and Southern District have separate
rules pertaining to this. These rules are found in the back of your local
rules listed under Rules for the Division of Business among District
Judges.
